For water Gujarat depends upon 185 river basins. We are going to discuss water pollution in rivers of Gujarat.
According to the recent report of
Times of India placed Gujarat on 4th rank in water pollution in rivers in India.
Gujarat has large number of rivers but we going mainly discussed about
water pollution in four main rivers
sabarmati ,narmada ,tapi and mahi.
In last we also discussed how the Gujarat government is taking steps to stop pollution.
We also tried to aware you about how to reduce the pollution in River by various simple but effective ways.

Rivers Of Gujarat , In which Water Pollution Is Present
Sabarmati river
From 371 kilometre, 323 kilometre length of sabarmati river is present in Gujarat. Rest of the river is present in Rajasthan.
It is generated in Aravalli range in udaipur district , Rajasthan. And gets deposited in Arabian sea at
gulf of khambhat.
But from previous many years due to the untreated or partially treated industrial and savage discharge, its becomes getting polluted before deposited in the Arabian Sea.
Main sources of water pollution among the sabarmati river is domestic and industrial activities on bank of this river.
According to report 12 % industrial and 88% domestic activities are responsible for this.
This is due to the presence of industries at hansol bridge , narol and naroda.
Tapi river
Tapi river 724 kilometre in length, which is generated in multai in madhya Pradesh, flows in various states of India like madhya Pradesh ,Maharashtra and Gujarat.
It enters in Gujarat through Surat city. It flow in between godavari and narmada river.
And finally gets deposited or submerged at gulf of khambhat in area at Arabian Sea.
But due to constant discharge of industrial and domestic waste and due to agricultural runoff, tapi is becoming polluted.
Almost 87 villages discharge their sewage and agriculture runoff in Tapi at Surat.
In 2018, due to interference of NGT (national green tribunal) and cpcb the emerging of Ganesh statue in Ganesh chaturthi in Tapi river has been banned due to the same reason.
According to SMC and cpcb it will help the Tapi river to reduce pollution in it.
Narmada river
Narmada is also known as life line for various states of India like madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
Narmada is formed at amarkantak platues in anuppur district , Madhya Pradesh.
Like Sabarmati and Tapi it also submurged in Arabian sea at gulf of khambhat.
Narmada divides North and South India their flow.
It has been tributaries like shakkar river,tawa and kolar river.
It also flows through various cities like jabalpur, vadodara, bharuch and omkareshwar.
Downstream water of river become polluted by untreated or partially treated industrial effluents and solid waste. There is no fresh water present in it.
It is mainly due to industrial sector in ankleshwar, jaga Dia and daneja.
This impacts the water level of narmada river. Now it ends at garudeshwar which is 165 kilometre away from Arabian Sea.
It is also impacting various economically backward classes by destroying the biodiversity, Marine ecosystem, fisherfolks and other natural resources.
Mahi river
580 km long mahi river induced in madhya Pradesh. And after flowing through Rajasthan it enters in Gujarat.
After flowing through Gujarat, life other rivers of Gujarat it deposited in gulf of khambat located in Arabian Sea.
In Gujarat, it flows in Anand district it also flow through karana dam located in mahisagar district.
According to an experiment by scientist the water quality of mahi river falls in medium and bad region.
According to report there is 15% of rise in salinity ingress of mahi river.
Which puts the mahi in polluted rivers of Gujarat.
Some suggestions for people of Gujarat to reduce water pollution in their rivers
-) One of the main causes of water pollution in rivers is deposition of untreated industrial effluents in rivers.
These industries are situated at the the bank of the river.
First we should focus on the treatment of these industrial waste in proper monitoring of the government.
It will reduce the water pollutants in the river or lake on a large scale.
-) Reduce the use of fertilizers at the agricultural field situated at a river bank.
It will help to reduce the eutrophication . Due to eutrophication water of lakes, ponds and rivers become colourless, inappropriate for drinking purpose and smell dirty.
It can also shows there are harmful impacts on Marine ecosystem.
-) villages which leaves at the banks of river . How their life through fishing. They have to avoid the overfishing practices in the river.
Because fishes are one of the main components of aquatic ecosystem. The balance of marine life will be disturbed.
This will accelerate the rate of pollution in the river.
-) Avoid using carbonaceous and fossil fuels in vehicle on the river. This will help to reduce water pollution as well as air pollution.
-) second major reason behind water pollution in Gujarat river is domestic activities.
Which pollute the river, lakes and ponds.
- Washing of cattles in the water of lakes.
- Introducing human waste in the river.
To reduce the pollution government must restrict all such mentioned activities.
