Why water pollution is such a big issue ? If it is what are its causes and effects.

If you are nature lover then you may be always worried about pollution and it's effects.

Water is very importance resource for any living organism. Without water you can only live up to 3 days .

Here i will discuss about effects and causes of pollution in water. How it is affecting agriculture, human health and environment.

                  What Is Water Pollution ?

Water pollution means the presence of foreign substance in the way bodies like humans, plants and animals waste. Water pollution is harmful for humans, plants and animals.

It can be defined as alteration in Physical characteristics of water through natural and human  activities .

 75% earth contain water but 97% water is present in the oceans and seas and 21% water is locked up in ice caps and glaciers. Only 1 water available for human use.

Majorly it affect aquatic plant and animal the most. Due to reduction of BOD (Biological oxygen demand) the oxygen percentage in water decreases.

As we all know major source of water pollution is humans . Water shortage is another big issue which will affect human in the future.

Causes of Water Pollution

Today humans are suffering from water Shortage , diseases and Nutrient deficiency in aquatic ecosystem.

All these problems are created by humans by various activities . We will explain you about this point wise and how nature cause if it.

Naturally

Naturally it caused by plant and animal waste which live in aquatic ecosystem. Due to plants which will grow faster and absorb Oxygen from water or cover the water surface.

Through which Sunlight Can not reaches to plant. Due to that fishes and Other plants will die.

One another reason for natural water pollution is acid rain . Which alter the ph in water. Due to this ph and temperature of water bodies increased. ph and temperature sensitive plants and animals die.

Human Activities

Acid depositions ->  when other industrial waste deposit in water it affect same as acid rain which we discussed before.

 Agriculture
Crop dusting ->  when Seed of crop dropped from airplane Some seed get into the Water and increased eutrophication

Fertilization -> When fertilisation are spreaded into the agricultural fields they do settle down into field. After rain these Settle down fertilizers get into water bodies which increase the rate of eutrophication.

Thermal discharge -> water is used dissipation of waste heat in power plant and industries .This heated water is without any treatment Subsequently discharged into water bodies .

This will increased biological activities causing deaths of some heat sensitive organisms and growth of algae increases.

Do concentration decrease this together with increased biological activities at high temperature that may result into anaerobic condition . Resulting in bad odour .

Radioactive Waste

Radioactive waste which is obtained from radioactive plant decomposed into water harm aquatic ecosystem very harshly.

Oil Pollution

 when oil spilled in the sea or ocean by accidentally oil cover the Surface of water bodies. It decreases the oxygen content of the water bodies. It decreases the oxygen content of the water body by reducing light transmission .

Effects Of Water Pollution

Nutrient deficiency in aquatic ecosystem

Population of decomposition microorganism like bacteria and fungi decline in acidified water which in turn reduces the rate of decomposition of organic matter affecting the nutrient cycling .

Ph reducer and water become acidic which harm  Ph Sensitive plant and animal.

Eutrophication ->  Eutrophication is a natural process and may takes thousand of years. However this is greatly enhanced through human activities is called accelerated eutrophication.

 Phosphorus is the major reason for accelerated eutrophication .

Human health

Some of the chemicals affecting human health are the presence of heavy metals Such as Fluoride , arsenic lead, cadmium, mercury petrochemical and nitrate.

 ~>Fluoride in excess in water can cause dental caries and weakening of  bones.

 ~> High Concentration of lead harmful for fitting, soldier and children

 ~>Arsenic is a very toxic chemicals causing respiratory cancer, arsenic skin lesion.

 ~> mercury is another toxic chemicals which caused minamata disease.

Material required -> Thin plane towel

Procedure ->  You have to collect some amount of water . Try to filter it through towel. Collect that filter water in another transparent vessel.
 Collect the garbage which didn't passed from towel.
Then kept that transparent vessel in side .

Observe it after few days. You can observe fine particle of dust settle down the bottom of vessel.

Result  -> By observing amount garbage. You collected during filtration, dust particles and colour of water which settle on upper side of dust . Water pollution in your near by water body.
